I never thought I’d say this, but “oh winter!…wherefore art thou?” After all, what is winter in Montana without snowballs, sledding and snowmen? Instead we’ve got record highs in Bozeman! Yep, 58 degrees yesterday! OK, so truth be told it has been nice, almost a luxury in fact having a break from last winter’s snowmaggedon, but our twins ski racing season starts tomorrow with only a 24″ base at Bridger and only one possible snow shower forecast in the next 10 days. So I say, bring it! And just in case Mother Nature needs a little inspiration, here’s a quick look back at some of the beauty of last year’s winter here at Sky Ranch.

win·try/ˈwintrē/

Adjective: Characteristic of winter, esp. in feeling or looking very cold and bleek: ”a wintry landscape”.

I don’t normally do commercial photography shoots, but when Sadie Mae called me in a relative panic in need of an image for her upcoming ad in Cowboys & Indians magazine with a submission deadline looming, I couldn’t resist saying yes simply because I just love her and her family (gutsy enough to smile through a photo session in a snowstorm seen here), but because I believe in her company, Little Turtle’s Tipi! I am very much a fan of toys that inspire imaginative play, where children can travel to the land of make-believe in their own backyard, where they can become Cowboys & Indians or bears and wolves for that matter. The tipi session was a family affair with Sadie’s son, Luka and my own twins, Sam & Larissa as “models”. Sadie and my husband Doug were “production assistants” setting up tipis and props while I directed. Once we let the kids loose, the session took on a life of it’s own to which the resulting photos can attest.

Little Turtle’s Tipis are hand-made in Bozeman, Montana. They come in two different heights and are perfect for indoor or outdoor play. Children can “customize” their tipis with markers and paints, creating an heirloom to be passed down for generations!

Two sweet sisters and a charming set of triplet boys makes for a group of grandchildren a man can be proud of. Patriarch Brian scheduled a session with me earlier this summer knowing his son, Sean and his two girls, and his daughter-in-law, Michelle and her triplet boys would all be coming to visit from Arizona for a fun-filled week in Montana. I love that Brian planned ahead and even had a custom banner made. What a guy! It was an absolute pleasure seeing how gentle and loving these kids were and how each had their own very unique personality. The girls adore their daddy, the triplets so protective of their mom. I wondered a bit about the O’Neill Clan, did an online search and found the Association of O’Neill Clans. Fascinating stuff! Also, love the mission statement behind Michelle’s business Intention Love…

I think I have always been drawn to personal possessions of the past…antique furniture, dusty old books, childhood toys, vintage cameras and photographs. As a child, our family frequented swap meets and stopped at antique stores and rummage sales every chance we got…treasure hunting. Today, it is the most worn and loved objects that speak to me. The teddy bear missing an eye, the book of children’s verses inscribed by a father to his daughter. Once a part of someone’s life, important and meaningful, now lost from the family and it’s history and for sale. I have been known to spend hours pouring over old photographs in antique malls. Studying images. Wondering who the people are and their relationship to one another. What their lives were like and how it is that their portrait ended up here, among a stack of other unknowns, with a price tag on it. Surely there are descendants alive today who would cherish the images…

Not too long ago, a man named John Jenson from Minnesota commented on one of my blogposts. He’d been going through old photos and found one of his maternal grandmother and two other people who he assumed to be her brother and sister dating back to the 1890′s. He searched for “Finn” and “Livingston, MT” on the internet (the name and location of the studio on the bottom of the photo) and found ME here! Not at all what he was expecting to find, but he was kind enough to leave a comment which led to an email conversation. This is the beautiful image he was researching:

As John wrote to me, “The woman on the left, black gloves, is my maternal grandmother, Hanna Peterson (some documents say Johanna). She married John Hedlund in about 1897. I have the list of all the things the bought to start their house in Little Falls, MN and this is dated 12.29.1887 so I assume that this is about when they were married. A note from my mother’s cousin would estimate it to have been a couple of years earlier. Looking at the Livingston photo and others taken in Little Falls, I would estimate that the Livingston photo was taken about 1894-6. I am not sure who the other two people are. Something I should have found out many years ago.” John also sent me a wedding photo (of Hanna Peterson to John Hedlund) which was done by Solem Brothers in Little Falls, MN here:

Oddly, I had been wondering about Livingston’s first professional portrait photographer since moving into my new space on East Lewis in October and I discovered that it was C.E. Finn who is credited with taking a photo of not only Calamity Jane but a few others I found on the internet such as this one of Thomas Orr and his new bride:

I emailed this image to John Jenson who was quick to observe that the Orrs are posed on the same carpet as his grandparents, the Hedlunds. John further noted, that “some things such as backdrops and movable props do not seem to have changed in concept over the years…though granted, much of your [Susann Saarel's] work seems to be outside without backdrops and a much less formal pose.” Through family photos dating to more than 100 years, John has traced his family back to Sweden and Denmark.

Finally, John says this, “If I knew when I was younger what I know now, I would have gotten more family history recorded.” John and his wife are from the Twin Cities area and have lived everywhere from Denver, CO to Rochester, NY. It is most interesting to note that John worked for Eastman Kodak for 35 years.

Putting the bits and pieces together can be challenging if not impossible. Research photos, take photos, archive photos. Always record who’s in them, places and dates (even estimated dates). Learn how to preserve your vintage photos {here}. And for goodness sake, please print out your snapshots, make albums and share with your children and family the story of their lives.

Many of you are still so young, having babies and raising children… but keep this in mind…when you get on in age, when you begin to realize your mortality, it becomes ever more important to share your history, your life, your legacy and to have it documented for the generations to come. It is a basic human desire to know where it is we came from. Our existence is temporary. Memories, stories and photos…these treasures of our lives live on.

Bozeman, March 5, 2011. After two days and nights camped out in the ICU waiting room with nothing more than the clothes on my back, my friend Patty stepped out of the elevator door one afternoon and boy, was she a sight for sore eyes. We hugged, we cried, we chatted, we dropped into see Doug in his room in the ICU and then she asked me if I’d been out at all. And would I like to spend the night at her house nearby. And I replied, I would like to go out. I would like to go to your house. After all, one can be a bag lady in the hospital for only so long and I was beginning to feel I was overstaying my welcome. Stepping out through the automatic hospital doors, the air hit me. Fresh and cool and breezy. It was alive. And I took a deep breath of it. And then Patty commented something along the lines of “Isn’t is strange how when your whole life stands still, that life goes on?” And it was true. There was traffic. There were people. Walking and talking. There were lights and movement and hustling and bustling. People driving home from work and going about their usual day. Ready to greet their families, cook dinner, relax and watch TV. While for our family, for me and our children, (unbeknownst to Doug in recovery from surgery, asleep for days under heavy medication), life had come to a sudden standstill where nothing was certain or normal anymore. And it felt strange in a way, to realize that the world hadn’t stopped revolving. Because life goes on. Daily routines, uninterrupted. Birth and death and life in-between. As it should be…

Last week, Doug & I attended a memorial service of a beloved member of our Livingston community, Hillary Johnson, the woman who created our very first websites (way back when websites were the new rage). Only 46 years of age, she touched the lives of so many with her kind heart, words and thoughtful ways. How our hearts go out to Spur, her adoring husband who lost his beautiful wife seemingly without warning, and whose life surely stood suddenly still and who’s still trying to make sense of it all, it sense can ever be found.

And yet, life goes on…

As I regained some sense of control of my life I took on a few sessions. That of 7 month old, Luke of Bozeman (which I will post soon) and 3 week old, Tatum Love of Big Sky. They, these precious little ones are the beautiful reminder that life is good and fresh and that it renews itself. How blessed we are to have this time on earth among our loved ones. To create and witness and share in the miracle of new life.

Thanks to Tatum’s parents, Lindsey and Peter for driving all the way to my Livingston boutique studio from Big Sky and for allowing me creative freedom with their precious newborn. It was such a pleasure meeting you!

On March 3rd, my husband survived a horrible accident. He was kicked in the face by one of our horses and God-willing, made in back to our home from the pasture where our barn sits. His mouth was ripped open. His face was swollen beyond recognition. There was blood everywhere. His lower jaw was broken in 3 places. His upper jaw had a chunk of bone missing and a tooth as well. His palate was broken open into the sinuses. His cheek was crushed into 100+ pieces. His orbit was broken in six places and his eye socket was broken as well. He was in the hospital for 2 weeks and underwent two surgeries…the first 6 hour surgery took place within 1/2 hour of arriving in the Trauma Unit which repaired his lower jaw. The second, to repair the cheek, orbit and eye socket took 5-1/2 hours. He is home now with his jaw wired shut another 2-3 weeks. And then there will likely be reconstructive and dental surgery to come. But we will get there. We will come out on the other side. Perhaps 6 months from now. Perhaps a year. Maybe more. We realize how lucky we are and we are so very grateful. He still has his vision. He still has his brain function. He may not look quite the way he used to, but he will always…always have my heart…

Wedding Day photo by Audrey Hall

My heart. It knew it met someone special the night I met you. I didn’t know how, or why back then in 1996, but I knew. Married within the year, our separate lives culminated into a singular moment on a Montana mountain-top. An eagle approached from the west, another from the east, flying continuously overhead in a dramatic courtship dance as we said our vows and the Justice of the Peace proclaimed…”Until death do you part.” And so it was every day from that day on for the next 12 years, through thick and through thin. You were my heart. You would always be my heart. And my strength. And my weakness. And never did I want to be without you.

When you came to be broken, so broken asking for help, my heart wanted to crumble into a million pieces, fall down and collapse. But you stood. If you had the strength to stand, so would I. I would not fail you. I would not fail us or our family. You needed me now.

…no time to call 911…get in the car. Sliding down the road, need to slow down. 100 mph on the highway…”are you ok?… can you breathe?’ Call the hospital. “Be ready, we’ll be there within 10 minutes.” At hospital. No one’s waiting. Rush in for a wheelchair. Door closes. Scream at door to open. Place Doug in the wheelchair. Push him into hospital. Suddenly in Trauma room. Asked to leave. “You don’t want to see this,” they say. Alone. So alone. Never did I think I’d be without you. Helpless. Lost. Afraid. Life spins on a dime. Without warning, the rug gets pulled out from under you and your life is turned upside-down. Spinning…spinning…

Never for a moment did we give up. Me on you. You on me. When we first saw each other right after the accident, our eyes locked and we both knew…bad as this was, we would survive this. We would survive. For you are my heart and mine is yours…until death do us part.
